Set Subject Competitions 2025-26
The set subject for the 2025-26 Season is "Contrasts"
Types of contrast
-
Tonal (or brightness) contrast: This is the most common form of contrast, referring to the difference between the brightest highlights and darkest shadows in a photo.
-
High contrast: Features a wide range of tones with bright highlights and dark, deep shadows, creating a dramatic and intense feel. This is often seen in black-and-white images and scenes shot in direct sunlight.
-
Low contrast: Characterised by a narrow range of tones, resulting in a soft, muted, and sometimes flat-looking image. This can evoke a calm, peaceful, or moody atmosphere and is often the result of shooting on an overcast day.
-
-
Colour contrast: Involves the use of different colours to create visual interest. This is most effective when using complementary colours, which are opposite each other on the colour wheel (e.g., red and green, blue and orange).
-
Textural contrast: Highlights the difference between surface textures within an image, such as placing a rough surface next to a smooth one. This emphasises the tactile qualities of objects and adds depth.
-
Conceptual contrast: Juxtaposes opposing ideas or subjects to create a sense of storytelling and narrative depth. Examples include old versus new architecture or nature versus urban environments.
The competition will be judged on February 25th
